Renewables Campaign 2008Our new priority campaign on renewable energy is now up and running. We’re looking to start a renewable energy revolution in the UK. Last year the UK Government agreed to meet specific renewable energy targets by 2020. Now it is trying to wriggle out of these commitments. We have a national day of action planned for 25 October 2008. Find out how you can help. Next year the Government will also publish its strategy on renewable energy. As we move into 2009 our campaign will focus on this. We want to see thriving home grown renewable energy industry in the UK.

Autumn ActivismThis autumn we’re working hard on two key campaigns: strengthening the Climate Bill and calling for the Government to support strong renewable energy targets. The Climate Change Bill will finally reach Report Stage during October. This will be the final opportunity for MPs to vote on key changes. At Conference this year we’ll also be launching a campaign in support of strong renewable energy targets. There will be a Renewables day of action for local groups on Saturday, 25th October. We have produced a briefing covering our climate related work on Renewables, the Climate Change Bill and the Planning Bill.

New Executive DirectorFriends of the Earth has a new Executive Director. His name is Andy Atkins and he has led a range of campaigns on environmental and social issues. Andy joins Friends of the Earth from development charity Tearfund. He launched their work on climate change and persuaded UK development charities to work on climate change as a poverty issue. Andy has also campaigned for human rights in Chile and has worked for development charity CAFOD. Read more about Andy. Under Andy’s leadership, Friends of the Earth will continue to push for political action to tackle environmental challenges. Our work will focus on climate change and biodiversity loss. Andy replaces Tony Juniper, who is standing down after 18 years at Friends of the Earth. Among many other achievements, Tony headed up Friends of the Earth’s Big Ask campaign, which with the support of over 200,000 people has led to a world-first climate change law. Local group members will have a chance to see Andy, and say goodbye to Tony, at Conference in September. If you can't make it to Conference, you can send a goodbye message to Tony via byebyetony@foe.co.uk
