Surface TransportRoad transport accounts for 22% of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions - and this figure is predicted to increase over the next fifteen years. Of the carbon dioxide emissions from transport, nearly 60% come from cars.
This increase needs to be stopped if we are going to prevent the worst effects of climate change. There are a number of ways in which we can do this:
Some more ideas on what we can do. 'Towards a Sustainable Transport System' - Public consultationOctober 2007The Government published a discussion document ‘Towards a Sustainable Transport System’, which proposes changes to the planning system and responds to the reports of Stern and Eddington. May - July 2008The Goverment will be undertaking a public consultation. This is a great opportunity to influence how we travel and how much we travel! Keep an eye out here and on our main transport campaign pages for news on how to respond. End of 2008The Government will produce a white paper on the transport system.
Low Carbon CarsLow carbon cars could make the single biggest contribution to cutting carbon emissions from transport. Key decisions are being made at the moment by the EU. You can help by telling your MEP that you want the EU to set tough standards for greener cars to make sure the car industry plays its full part in helping to tackle climate change. Keep an eye out here and on main transport pages for the latest information or sign up to www.transportactioneurope.org to be kept in touch.
